You can tweak the html to make the template wider, that is what I do with some of these blogspot backgrounds. I use the ones made for 3 column layouts but use the 2 column template and make the text area wider so photos fit better.
Love the Blog, you will have to share what you figured out if I can't figure it out myself. LOL.
